Writers

Jon Abernathy

Hi! My name is Jon Abernathy and I’m one of the new Hop Press Featured Writers.

Before this gig, I’ve been writing for years under my own beer blog, The Brew Site, as well as two others: Hack Bend (regional guide to Bend, Oregon) and chuggnutt.com (my longtime personal blog, sadly much-neglected these days).

Jon at the Oregon Brewers Festival

I’ve been drinking and brewing good beer since sometime in the mid-90s, and I’ve loved writing about it these last five years at my blog, so naturally when the chance to write for Hop Press came up, it seemed like a perfect fit.

Some of my favorite styles of beer include:

  • American Amber Ales
  • Barleywines
  • Pumpkin Beers
  • Saisons and Bières de Garde
  • Doppelbocks

But you know, I can get along with pretty much any beer.

I live in Bend, Oregon, in the great Pacific Northwest—great because this is beer country; there is never a shortage of great, diverse, local beers to choose from.

I’ll be posting under my “Featured Writer” status every Saturday, but I’ll try to post interesting things in the meantime, too. And don’t forget to check out The Brew Site while you’re at it.

Thanks!

Lisa Morrison

So, I am sitting here in an internet cafe run by some smug guy in a stocking cap who actually tried to explain to me how wireless internet works when all I really wanted to know is how much it cost so I could write this up and get to some serious beer tasting.

The hotel we are staying at here in Victoria, British Columbia, said it had wi-fi, but really didn’t. So those visions of me polishing off this little duty while sipping a freshly made local ale in our room were sent crashing in flames faster than a Lowenbrau on the Hindenburg.

But, that’s OK. I am used to such setbacks in my efforts to scour the world to get to know great beer and the people who make it.

I will add more here, later, after we get back home. And when I have a stable internet connection that isn’t costing me a coffee every half hour when my bladder and my husband and dog aren’t waiting for me to finish up so we can go exploring. On my hubby’s birthday, no less!

Ah, yes. The work of a beer writer never ends. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Mario Rubio

My name is Mario Rubio and I’m a craft beer drinker.

I began writing for my website, Brewed For Thought, back in October of 2007. Started as a collaborative project, Brewed For Thought quickly became a one man site. Under the tutelage of the late William Brand I learned how to become a beer writer and was encourage to strive for more than just being a beer geek with a blog and to try to find real stories.

In addition to writing for Brewed For Thought, I have since added a regular column in the Northwest Brewing News as the Bay Area columnist and for Examiner.com as the Santa Rosa Craft Beer Examiner. For more of my writing please follow the links listed before and feel free to contact me at mario (at) brewedforthought.com. I can also be found at my Twitter account.

Ken Weaver

Ken drinking Double Down Stout at Brew BrothersKen and his wife Ali returned to the U.S. in the fall of 2009, after an arduous (beer-wise) extended period in Central America. After two+ years imbibing with the DC Ratebeer crew, hunting down rare beers and awaking to large cardboard boxes on their porch, they’re now resettled and sipping session beers in Northern California, approximately six blocks from Russian River Brewing Company.

Ken (K. M.) Weaver received his MFA in creative writing from the University of Maryland – College Park and his M.S. in physics from Cornell University. He has taught creative writing both at Maryland and in a remote Miskito village in Nicaragua. His fiction has appeared in failbetter, MonkeybicycleMcSweeney’s Internet Tendency, and Twelve Stories. His beer writing has appeared in Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, and his first major freelance piece (about adjuncts in craft beer) is the cover story of the March 2011 issue of All About Beer. He previously served as Managing Editor of The Hop Press. More at www.kmweaver.com.

Anneliese (Ali) Schmidt provides photographs with her Nikon D90, and currently works as a renewable energy consultant. She received her M.S. in physics from Cornell University. She’s finally (thankfully) come around to sour beers. Her first published photos and cover shot appear in that same issue of All About Beer.
